NHF (Orlando, July 21-23): The newly formed NHF-MASAC Pain Working Group hosted an interactive session for patients and caregivers at the National Hemophilia Foundation’s Annual Meeting focusing on how pain is evaluated and managed at hemophilia treatment centers. While most patients/caregivers reported that pain is most commonly assessed on a 0-10 scale, it was also noted that the evaluation of pain was most commonly in response to the patient/caregiver bringing up the subject of pain, and not done as a routine part of the annual visit. While there was some discussion on use of opiates, there was also concern raised that the national discussion on opiates might negatively impact patients with hemophilia being able to get appropriate pain medications to treat their joint pain.
